Wilfrid Laurier University Debates Over Security Guards Using Pepper Spray

I was just reading an article that comes for Wilfrid Laurier University’s online newspaper.  They are considering letting the on campus security guards carry mace pepper spray.  The student union board of directors met to discuss the option and decide if it should happen or not.

After their meeting they decided to remain neutral on the issue and consult with lawyer first.  This is understandable because there could be possible legal issue if it is used inappropriately.

In my personal opinion I feel this is something that should defiantly be done.  The security guards are pepper themselves in danger trying to keep the college students safe.   They have little to protect themselves.  In an environment where many parties take place they put themselves at risk for coming upon a violent drunk that could put them in danger.

If they are there trying to keep thing student body safe pepper spray would be a great way for them to keep themselves safe.  Many college students out there already carry pepper spray to keep themselves safe.

Fact is, college campuses are pretty dangerous places.  They are a melting pot of people that come from all over the country.  Most of them are there to better themselves but there are always a few people there that are just not right in the head and when drugs and alcohol get mixed in there could be bad results.  On top of that there are many individuals out there that are not enrolled in college but may lurk on the campuses looking for a stray person to mug or rap.

Pepper Spray is an extremely effective way of keeping yourself safe and I recommend it for almost everyone out there.  Espically students that are in college.  Most of the time when you are off at school you are in a strange place that you have never been before and may not be familiar with the area.
